Njala University Breaks Ground for New Classrooms to Address Overcrowding

In a decisive response to the growing demand for educational space, Prof. Alieu Mohamed Bah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Njala University, officially launched the construction of four new classrooms on Tuesday. This strategic initiative is aimed at addressing the university’s pressing challenge of accommodating its increasing student population.

Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, Prof. Bah emphasized that this two-story classroom project is more than just an infrastructural development; it is the realization of a long-standing vision held by the university administration under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bashiru Mohamed Koroma. "With enrollment surging year after year, our limited classroom space has hindered effective learning. This project represents a critical step in overcoming that obstacle," Prof. Bah remarked.

The new classrooms are designed to hold up to 1,000 students at any given time, a solution that will significantly reduce overcrowding during peak class hours. In addition to addressing capacity concerns, Prof. Bah noted the project’s positive impact on the local community, particularly through the creation of job opportunities for local youth.

Mr. Alusine Babatude Newland, Finance Director of Njala University, underscored the institution's commitment to supporting the national agenda on education. "This construction initiative aligns with our dedication to the president’s goal of making education accessible to all. We are determined to equip the university with the resources necessary to meet our academic goals for this year," he said.

The project’s lead engineer, Mr. Santigi Sesay of the Direction of Physical Plant and Services, provided further insight into the construction process. The first phase, comprising two classrooms, is expected to be completed by December 2024. He highlighted the inadequacies of the current infrastructure, such as the auditorium that seats only 480 students, which is insufficient for first-year courses and significant ceremonies. "This project will offer multi-purpose facilities, effectively responding to the academic needs of our students," Mr. Sesay explained, while encouraging the community to provide constructive feedback as the project progresses.

As Njala University moves forward with this essential development, the administration reaffirms its dedication to overcoming the challenges of expanding enrollment and ensuring that high-quality education remains within reach for all students. The construction of these classrooms marks a pivotal moment in the university’s efforts to enhance its educational infrastructure.
