Chief Minister David Sengeh Congratulates Mary Yongai on Historic Guinness World Record Achievement
Chief Minister David Sengeh has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Mary Yongai, a young Sierra Leonean who has made history as the first individual from Sierra Leone to win a Guinness World Record. Yongai, a final-year student at Fourah Bay College and an alumna of Methodist Girls High School, achieved this extraordinary milestone by breaking a 19-year record for the most make-ups done in 24 hours.
In his message, the Chief Minister lauded Yongai’s remarkable accomplishment, praising her determination, resourcefulness, and perseverance. Reflecting on his meeting with the record-breaker, Sengeh highlighted how Yongai’s inspiring journey is a powerful testament to the potential of Sierra Leonean youth.
“Mary Yongai is Sierra Leone’s first individual winner of a Guinness World Record. She’s just an everyday girl, a final-year student who may sit next to you on a Waka Fine ride, but her story is far from ordinary,” Sengeh remarked. He noted that what sets Yongai apart is her incredible vision and her ability to turn a dream into reality despite limited resources.
Yongai’s journey to setting the world record began with a dream she pursued relentlessly. With minimal resources, she researched the process online, applied using her phone, and prepared for the challenge with the help of two friends. Her perseverance paid off as she captured the evidence of her achievement using simple cameras, overcoming challenges such as slow network connectivity to upload the required data. With support from the Ministry of Tourism and UBA, Yongai’s dream became a reality.
The Chief Minister also noted that President Julius Maada Bio had personally congratulated Yongai on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging her inspiring feat. Motivated by this recognition, Yongai sought and secured an appointment with the Chief Minister to share her journey in person.
Beyond her individual achievement, Yongai is committed to inspiring other young Sierra Leoneans. She aims to encourage youth to prioritize education and acquire job-creating skills, aligning with the government’s agenda of radical inclusion and youth empowerment.
“Her vision is extraordinary,” Sengeh emphasized. “She wants to inspire more youths to engage in education and earn job-creating skills. She and her team of inspiring young women embody why President Bio prioritizes education and skills development.”
In his closing remarks, Chief Minister Sengeh expressed his admiration for Yongai’s perseverance and her role as a trailblazer for Sierra Leonean youth. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting young people in their pursuit of education and opportunities, recognizing that her story is a powerful reflection of the nation’s potential.
“Thank you, Mary, for inspiring all of us. We are encouraged to go for the next world record, and #WeWillDeliver,” Sengeh concluded.
