Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority Records Major Milestones in Vessel Traffic and Import Growth

The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority (SLPHA) has made significant strides in vessel traffic and import volumes, as announced by Director General Yankuba Askia Bio during the Ministry of Information and Communications’ (MOIC) weekly press briefing. These advancements reflect the authority’s commitment to strengthening the nation's port infrastructure and overall maritime operations.

DG Bio proudly shared that vessel traffic has grown, rising from 426 vessels in 2022 to 435 vessels in 2023, signaling a robust increase in maritime activities. Additionally, imports saw a 9% boost, with the total volume of goods handled jumping from 61,000 metric tons in 2022 to 68,000 metric tons in 2023. These figures underscore a positive trend in Sierra Leone’s trade and economic activity, facilitated through its ports.

In line with President Julius Maada Bio's employment agenda, the SLPHA has also created 200 new jobs, with the employees earning above the national minimum wage, further contributing to local economic empowerment.

Moreover, DG Bio detailed the authority’s ongoing digital transformation, which is transitioning the port’s operations from traditional paper-based processes to more efficient and transparent electronic systems. This shift is being fueled by €64,000 in funding from international partners, aimed at modernizing operations and enhancing overall efficiency.

In terms of infrastructure development, the SLPHA has secured key agreements with prominent partners. One of these agreements, with Arise IIP, involves the development of a Dry Port that will enhance storage and handling capabilities. Another major partnership with the Gento Group focuses on constructing a transshipment port, poised to bolster Sierra Leone’s standing in both regional and international trade networks.

These initiatives underscore SLPHA’s proactive role in improving operational capacity, fostering economic growth, and positioning Sierra Leone as a competitive player in global maritime trade.
