Government Crackdown: Deputy Trade Minister Orders Closure of “SANCAREDCIE” for Breaching Trade Regulations

Deputy Minister of Trade, Fatmata Kargbo, has announced the impending closure of the “SANCAREDCIE” provision shop, located on Kroo Town Road, due to serious violations of Sierra Leone’s Trade Act. The shop was discovered selling expired products, which pose significant health risks to consumers, during a routine inspection by trade authorities across Freetown.

Minister Kargbo stated that the expired goods found on the shop's shelves were deemed unfit for human consumption, constituting a severe breach of the nation's trade regulations. The Trade Act mandates that all shop owners create a designated section for items nearing their expiration date, specifically those set to expire within the next three months. These products are required to be sold at discounted prices to ensure they are cleared from the market before expiration, a practice that “SANCAREDCIE” failed to implement.

Emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health, Minister Kargbo made it clear that strict measures will be enforced against businesses that compromise consumer safety by selling expired goods. As a consequence of these violations, “SANCAREDCIE” will be shut down, with further penalties likely to follow as investigations continue. This action underscores the government's zero-tolerance policy towards violations of trade regulations and its dedication to protecting the wellbeing of Sierra Leonean consumers.
