Oped: Grassroots Supporters Rally Behind Dr. Samura Kamara Amid APC Leadership Tensions

Thousands of dedicated grassroots supporters of the All People’s Congress (APC) in Sierra Leone and its diaspora are showing strong allegiance to Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara, the APC’s presidential candidate in both the 2018 and 2023 elections. This movement of support comes as a response to what they view as the APC leadership’s efforts to marginalize Dr. Kamara. Supporters have issued a stern warning to the party's leadership, suggesting that if Dr. Kamara continues to face exclusion, he should consider establishing a new political party. 


Supporters argue that sidelining Dr. Kamara could jeopardize the APC’s 2028 election chances, potentially giving leverage to the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). Many party members are advocating for a shift in the APC's stance, concerned that isolating a respected figure like Dr. Kamara could push the APC into a longer period in opposition.


Political analysts acknowledge Dr. Kamara’s potential to unify voters across party lines and perhaps become Sierra Leone’s first democratically elected president through a fresh political platform. His leadership qualities, emphasis on peace, and broad appeal among citizens could make him a formidable force against both the APC and SLPP. 

Despite his setbacks in recent elections, Dr. Kamara’s choice to avoid confrontational politics—prioritizing national stability—has earned him respect from across the political spectrum. His opposition to protests or strikes under the current administration highlights his commitment to shielding his supporters from potential consequences. 


Tensions within the APC escalated recently when party leaders, invoking a constitutional clause, removed Dr. Kamara from his leadership role, further fueling discontent among his supporters. The resignation of his longtime running mate, Hon. Chernor Bah, has also intensified concerns about the APC’s future direction.

The grassroots support for Dr. Kamara remains strong, with many calling for his reinstatement and warning that sidelining him could harm the party’s prospects. Recognizing Dr. Kamara’s economic acumen and diplomatic experience, they believe he is an invaluable asset to Sierra Leone’s political landscape.
