Sierra Leone to Strengthen Healthcare System with $50 Million Oxygen Factory

Sierra Leone is on the brink of a major advancement in healthcare with the establishment of a $50 million oxygen factory, thanks to an agreement with a Turkish company. Set to be located on a four-acre site in Kerry Town, near Waterloo in the Western Rural District, the factory aims to significantly enhance the nation's capacity to meet both medical and industrial oxygen demands.


The project includes the installation of state-of-the-art gas and liquid oxygen production plants. Operating under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) technical agreement, the arrangement will ensure that the factory is efficiently managed and operated, securing a continuous and reliable supply of oxygen for critical healthcare services as well as industrial applications. 


Sources reveal that the oxygen factory is expected to generate hundreds of jobs for local communities, offering training and skill development that will uplift the surrounding areas. In addition to boosting employment, the project will contribute to Sierra Leone's overall economic growth by driving development in multiple sectors.

This venture, facilitated by a Lebanese national and coordinated in partnership with the Embassy of Malta in Freetown, has received strong backing from the Ministry of Health. Health officials have emphasized the crucial role this facility will play in strengthening emergency and critical care services, especially in hospitals where oxygen is often a lifesaving resource.


Ambassador Solomon Gembeh, the Commissioner of the National Communications Authority (NaTCA) and former High Commissioner to Nigeria, has been instrumental in advancing the project. His involvement, alongside firm support from the government, underscores the national importance of this initiative.

Although discussions for this project initially began under the previous administration, delays hampered its progress. However, the Turkish company’s proven track record with similar ventures in Sierra Leone offers confidence that the project will be implemented smoothly.


As Sierra Leone prepares to launch this transformative project, there is growing optimism about its profound impact on the country’s healthcare infrastructure and economy. The oxygen factory represents not only a major healthcare advancement but also a critical step forward in the nation’s development strategy.
