President Julius Maada Bio Calls for Urgent UN Security Council Reforms, Advocates for Africa’s Inclusion
President Julius Maada Bio has issued a powerful call for urgent reforms to the United Nations Security Council, championing Africa’s rightful place in global peace and security governance. As the Coordinator of the African Union’s Committee of Ten (C-10) on Security Council Reform, President Bio emphasized the need for Africa to be granted two permanent seats with veto power, alongside two additional non-permanent seats.
In his passionate plea, President Bio highlighted the current structure of the Security Council as outdated and unjust, particularly regarding Africa's representation. “The Security Council has been stuck in time. Its imbalanced composition is unjust and at odds with current realities, undermining its legitimacy and effectiveness,” he declared. He argued that the absence of permanent African representation is a historical injustice that weakens the Council’s ability to address global crises equitably.
President Bio urged the global community to act collectively in addressing this imbalance, stating that African voices must be fully integrated into global decision-making, especially since many of the world’s most pressing peace and security challenges directly affect the continent. He reiterated the African Union’s long-standing demand for reform, urging the international community to support a more inclusive and equitable Security Council that reflects the diversity of today’s world.
In addition to advocating for structural reforms, President Bio called for ceasefires in ongoing global conflicts. He urged the international community to intensify its efforts to address the crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, while promoting support for African-led peace initiatives, particularly in conflict-affected regions such as the Sahel.
“The world is at a critical juncture, and we must act with unity and resolve to end conflicts that continue to claim innocent lives,” President Bio stated. He emphasized that peace and security cannot be achieved without addressing the root causes of conflict and ensuring fair representation of all regions in global governance.
President Bio’s address is a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s leadership on the world stage, as the country serves its second term as an elected member of the UN Security Council. His advocacy not only strengthens Africa’s central role in shaping the future of global governance but also underscores the importance of multilateral cooperation in promoting peace and ending violence globally.
