Flights to Sierra Leone Set to Increase to 50 per Week by Next Month

Madam Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, has announced that the number of weekly flights to Sierra Leone will increase to 50 by October 2024. Speaking at the weekly government press briefing on September 17, 2024, she highlighted the remarkable progress made under her leadership as she approaches her first year in office.

Upon assuming her role, flight frequency to Sierra Leone stood at 37 per week. However, through strategic efforts to attract more flights and ensure regulatory compliance, this number has already risen to 47 flights per week, with the introduction of Ethiopian Airlines being a key factor.

Madam Barrie further revealed that Brussels Airlines will be increasing their flights to Sierra Leone from three to five times per week starting in October. This additional capacity will bring the total weekly flights to 50, a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector.

In addition to these achievements, Barrie announced that discussions are ongoing with two other airlines to provide direct regional connectivity to neighboring countries, including Guinea, Liberia, and Ivory Coast. This development is expected to resolve the current challenges faced by passengers traveling within the region, particularly the lengthy and indirect travel routes between Sierra Leone and its neighbors.

With December being the peak travel period, Madam Barrie also mentioned plans to introduce charter flights connecting London and Freetown, with potential developments in the next two to three months.

Her tenure is marked by a strong focus on increasing international connectivity while ensuring compliance with global aviation standards, setting a foundation for continued growth in Sierra Leone's aviation sector.
